Flappers were young women in the 1920s who wore short skirts, bobbed their hair, listened to jazz, and flaunted their disdain for what was then considered acceptable behavior. They were seen as the "new breed " of women who wore excessive makeup, drank alcohol, treated sex in a casual manner, smoked, drove automobiles, and otherwise flouting social and sexual norms.

Flappers were young women of supposedly loose morals. They used fashion to rebel against the uptight moral code of the day. Their shorter skirts were sometimes decorated with fringe and reveal their legs, which was scandalous at the time. They accessorized with long necklaces - usually a long strand of pearls looped once or twice around their neck - and sometimes wore an unstructured felt cloche hat. Undergarments were designed to flatten the chest which gave clean straight lines to the garments they wore.
